Pass It On - The Tulcan Scholarship

Program Overview

Tulcan’s mission focus is to support American companies–especially family-owned businesses– that are keeping the flame of American ingenuity and craftsmanship ablaze. We recognize the incredible value of the know-how that resides within the people who have kept the nation’s remaining manufacturing and industrial enterprises operating through the post-industrial era, and the importance of preserving that knowledge.

In support of that mission, we have established the Pass It On Scholarship to encourage a) young Americans to launch careers in manufacturing or trades and b) businesses in those industries to establish or expand on-site training programs in which the next generation of builders may learn from master craftsmen.

In so doing, we believe that–when combined with ongoing reshoring–in 20-30 years America will have a significantly stronger economy, stronger businesses, and stronger communities.

The scholarship will be available exclusively to Tulcan company employees and their immediate family. We encourage all employees of the Tulcan network of companies to join us in revitalizing our nation’s manufacturing base by empowering the makers of tomorrow.

Scholarship Criteria

Applicants must be a Tulcan employee or the immediate family member of a Tulcan employee, as well as a U.S. citizen who agrees to work in an approved trade or industry for a minimum of three years following trade school graduation and/or certification by an accredited manufacturing guild such as MSSC, OSHA, NIMS, AWS, etc.

Scholarship funds are granted either to approved trade schools and participating businesses with on-site job training, or directly to scholarship recipients as forgivable loans. In the latter scenario, each year the recipient works in an approved trade or industry, one year of loan obligation is forgiven. If the recipient does not meet the employment requirement, the remaining balance must be repaid.

Recipient Qualities and the Application Process

Tulcan is looking for young men and women who are not only pursuing a trade, but who demonstrate the character, work ethic, and long‑term commitment needed to sustain America’s industrial knowledge base.

The ideal candidate will be eager to learn, excited by their chosen field, and interested in one day starting their own manufacturing or production business in the U.S.

Applicants will complete the form to provide their personal information, proof citizenship, school/training program details, personal statement, and other info. During each annual award cycle, the selection committee will review the application, verify and approve the chosen program, and interview each of the scholarship finalists before making their final determination.

Recipient Responsibilities

Recipients are expected to complete their training or certification and work in an approved trade or industry for at least three years after completion. During that three-year period, they are encouraged to update Tulcan on their career progress often, and they are required to verify their employment in their agreed-upon field annually.

Recipients are also expected to uphold the Tulcan values of professionalism and integrity in their work. At any point during or after the three-year period, they may also be asked to participate in community engagement, mentorship, or virtual events to promote the scholarship program, and they are strongly encouraged to do so in keeping with the spirit of ‘passing it on.’

What Recipients Can Expect from Tulcan

In addition to financial aid, Tulcan pledges to do everything within their power to put scholarship recipients on the path to success. This may include, for example…

  • job readiness coaching and resume writing help

  • introductions to industry professionals and business leaders

  • guidance on industry certifications, open positions they are aware of, etc.

  • mentorship by a Tulcan associate or other accomplished industry professional

  • a PPE starter kit tailored to the recipient’s field

  • access to the Tulcan ‘alumni network’ and the ability to connect with previous scholarship winners

  • an “Entrepreneurship Track” for select recipients with workshops, investor/lender introductions, templates for business plans, safety plans, and compliance, etc.
